Necessity for Continuous Human Resource Development

Most business enterprises consider their employees as their most important assets. Human intervention is always necessary no matter what level of automation is accomplished in a company or business organization. Highly automated and technology-intensive business enterprises will always need for machine designers, computer programmers and maintenance crew that will ensure the functions of the machines. A factory, store, and office will not operate without the human resources.

Majority of the existing manual and dangerous jobs may eventually become automated but human supervision will always be needed. Having a continuous human resource development program is in the interest of a business enterprise. This can be done in two ways, namely, through system of rewards or incentives and through trainings.

On one hand, a system of rewards or incentive system can have positive impact on employee motivation. It could either be a monetary reward or non-monetary reward such as in the form of promotions and commendations. People must have the opportunity for growth and mobility in terms of positions in the company. An incentive or reward system, however, may not have sufficient impact in terms of developing human resources. This is especially true for employees who lack self-confidence and skills.

Individual employees have the innate talents and potential that need to be developed through training. The training should be properly tailored. Company-sponsored training must be designed based on the needs of the business enterprise and should be tailored to the individual aptitudes. Training programs could either be highly specific to the jobs or it could be part of generic human resource development of a particular department. These programs may include leadership training programs and team-building seminars.

Continuous human resource development programs are not only beneficial to the employees but also very important for the companies. For instance, a business communication training program for managers and ordinary workers will help in improving operational efficiency. Important decisions will be more defensible and collective if there is good communication. The responsiveness of a company will be faster when dealing with employees and clients. Employees' morale and interpersonal relationships can also be greatly improved.

If the morale and motivation are strong, employees are likely to perform better. They will tend to seek innovative solutions to problems. The need for direct supervision and micro-management is significantly reduced. Autonomy and initiative in problem-solving are among the main objectives in conducting training programs. These programs also improve teamwork and group cohesiveness.
